COTA, designed with input from former motorcycle champion Kevin Schwantz, has hosted the FIA WEC since 2013 and is known for its modern features. The track’s layout includes significant elevation changes, high-speed corners, and challenging technical sections, making it a favorite for drivers and fans. With a length of 5.513 km and 20 turns, the track requires careful tire and brake management, especially as Hypercars can exceed speeds of 315 km/h. COTA has gained a reputation for being tough, having seen several teams unable to finish recent races, indicating its challenging nature. Memorable races have occurred here, such as the 2017 race that ended with a mere 0.276-second margin, and another recent close finish in the LMGT3 class.

As the FIA WEC returns to COTA for the 2026 Lone Star Le Mans, it marks the 15th North American trip for the series and a significant moment in the Hypercar category. Currently, there is a tie at the top of the Drivers’ World Championship and only five points separate Toyota and BMW in the Manufacturers’ standings. Both brands have won twice this season; however, neither has a victory at COTA. Notably, some drivers have participated in all past races at the venue, and BMW has shown strong potential, with fast laps recorded in previous races.

Cadillac is also eager to build on its momentum after finishing on the podium last time at Interlagos with its V-Series.R. The team features well-accomplished drivers who have won at COTA before. Meanwhile, Peugeot celebrated its first podium in 2025 at the circuit, adding to the competitive atmosphere of the Hypercar class. The qualifying session often shapes the race outcome at COTA, as historically, winning has been challenging from positions lower than fourth on the grid, and Ferrari has usually secured the front row in recent events.

In the LMGT3 category, Corvette leads the standings at the mid-season point after victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a subsequent race in Brazil. This is notable, as it is the first time an American manufacturer heads into a home race after consecutive wins, though they have not yet claimed victory on home soil at COTA. Ben Keating, a local driver, will also set a record for most FIA WEC starts by an American driver during this race. Several American competitors are participating in this race, and there have been multiple podium finishers from the USA this season.

Britain’s teams have historically excelled in the LMGT3 category at COTA, with McLaren and Aston Martin having previously won races. McLaren celebrated its first win last season, while Aston Martin has not achieved victory lately but is looking to improve on past performances. Proton Competition’s Ford Mustangs showed strong qualifying times but struggled during races, highlighting the challenges teams face at this circuit. The pole position struggles continue, as no pole sitter has achieved a top finish at COTA in recent races, highlighting the competitive nature of the series.
