Snetterton Race 2: Tillbrook/Barnicoat and Stanton/Gamble at the double for Optimum
#7 - Andrew Howard / Ross Gunn - Beechdean Motorsport Ltd - Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 Evo
Morgan Tillbrook and Ben Barnicoat are now the leaders of the British GT Championship after winning their second race of the season at Snetterton. This win positions them ahead with just two races left. In the GT4 category, Optimum Racing secured its first victory with drivers Josh Stanton and George Gamble.
Andrew Howard and Ross Gunn from Beechdean started strong, leading from pole position, but they finished third overall. Simon Orange and Marcus Clutton, driving the Orange/JMH McLaren, claimed second place and their third podium finish of the season despite facing Compensation Time penalties. The victory in GT4 for Stanton and Gamble was partly helped by longer pit stops from other teams.
In GT4, Daniel Lavery and Darren Turner also celebrated their second victory of the day, while Tom Bradshaw and Ian Duggan rounded out the overall podium in their Porsche. Optimum Racing was recognized as the Team of the Weekend for their three wins across the two classes, while Jack Mitchell secured another Fastest Lap award despite not participating in Race 2. Barnicoat achieved the fastest lap in the GT3 category.
In the GT3 race, Barnicoat’s strong start helped him gain an early advantage over Clutton. The McLaren faced a penalty in Race 1 that allowed them to avoid additional Compensation Time in Race 2, which proved to be significant. Howard and Gunn in the Aston Martin initially had a lead but fell short after Howard spun, which allowed Tillbrook to overtake and maintain his position.
Despite Howard’s efforts to close the gap to Tillbrook, he couldn’t regain the lead. Orange managed to take second from Howard before the race ended. Instead of a GT3 win for Beechdean, Optimum Racing secured their second victory of the weekend after another successful race earlier in the day. Tillbrook and Barnicoat extended their lead in the championship standings ahead of Alex Martin and Jarrod Waberski, who faced penalties.
In the GT4 race, Optimum’s Stanton and Gamble had a strong performance and controlled the race after Gamble took the lead early on. Their race was aided by the absence of rival Jack Mitchell due to a mechanical issue before the race began. After taking an early lead, Gamble handed over to Stanton, who maintained the lead in clean air without extra pit stop time.
Duggan, after taking over the Porsche from Bradshaw, had a competitive encounter but was eventually overtaken by Lavery, who secured second place for the Grange Aston Martin. This result allowed Lavery and Turner to sweep the Pro-Am wins throughout the day. The competition remains tight at the top of the overall standings with several teams closely matched in points.
On the overall podium for GT4, Collins and Templeton took fourth, followed by Hawkins and Orton in another MK Aston Martin. A significant engine issue forced Race 1 winners Holland and Simpson to retire, influencing the championship standings. The next race will take place at Donington, featuring the British GT’s two-hour endurance format on September 5 and 6.
