Alex Wurz named as Grand Marshal for 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours

Two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner and Toyota Gazoo Racing ambassador, Alex Wurz, will follow in the footsteps of Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen and has been named as Grand Marshal for the 84th edition of one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The third round of the WEC will this year take place on Saturday/Sunday 18/19th June.

Austrian Wurz won the event firstly as a 22-year-old in 1996 at the wheel of a TWR-Joest Porsche, and followed it up with a second victory in 2009 in a Peugeot alongside David Brabham and Marc Gené. In the intervening years he raced in 69 Grands Prix for Benetton and Williams, as well as working for many years for McLaren, and became such a respected figure that he now heads the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association.

In 2012, Alex was the first driver recruited by Toyota when the Japanese car company decided to enter the WEC. The same year he scored the make’s first victory in the 6 Hours of São Paulo and went on to win three further races before retiring from the cockpit (apart from a one-off appearance in January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona!) at the end of 2015.
