Toyota celebrated its 10th victory at home in the 6 Hours of Fuji on September 27, 2026, overcoming a challenging race to secure their place at the top of the FIA World Endurance Championship standings. For most of the event, the Alpine team appeared poised to take the top two spots in front of a large crowd of 72,326 spectators at Fuji Speedway, as they had started from the front row.
The French prototypes led the race for the initial five hours, but a late safety car due to a significant accident involving the 58 Garage 59 LMGT3 McLaren changed the race’s dynamics. During the pit stop that followed, Toyota took a strategic risk by choosing not to change tires on Hirakawa’s 8 TR010 Hybrid Hypercar, which had been running in sixth place at the time. In contrast, Alpine’s drivers received fresh tires, causing them to drop back in the standings.
As the race resumed with only 20 minutes left, the driver for Alpine, Victor Martins, made a strong move past Aston Martin’s Marco Sørensen and eventually set his sights on the second position, quickly working his way forward. A lead change seemed imminent as he approached Hirakawa, but the Toyota driver held firm, defending his position successfully. The race concluded with Toyota achieving a narrow victory by just 0.591 seconds over Martins, marking Toyota’s first win at Fuji in three years. This result propelled Hirakawa, Hartley, and Buemi to the top of the Drivers’ World Championship table.
Hirakawa shared his thoughts on the challenging restart, detailing how changing conditions and cold tires added to the pressure. He credited his team’s support and emphasized the thrill of winning in front of their fans. The remaining podium spots were filled by the 36 Alpine and the 15 BMW, while the 35 Alpine took fourth place, marking a significant achievement for the Alpine team. Cadillac rounded out the top five, while Peugeot earned its best result this season in sixth place.
Aston Martin finished ninth, and the defending champion Ferrari had a disappointing day, with the 51 entry only managing a tenth-place finish, significantly impacting their title defense. The next race of the championship is the 6 Hours of Barcelona, scheduled to take place from October 16-18, 2026.
