FIA Formula 2 – Boya and Montoya narrowly miss out on points in Madrid Feature Race

Mari Boya and Sebastian Montoya both brought their PREMA Racing cars home in the top half of the field in Sunday’s Feature Race, with Boya eleventh and Montoya thirteenth, agonisingly just outside the points after both were involved in midfield battles throughout the closing laps.

Boya ran an alternative strategy, starting on the hard tyre and pitting early before rejoining and setting some of the quickest laps on track, at one stage running over two seconds per lap faster than race leader Beganovic. That pace helped him work his way back through the field, passing Rafael Câmara, Martinius Stenshorne and Nikola Tsolov in the second half of the race, before a fight through the final sector with Tsolov and Roman Bilinski cost him a couple of positions back.

He ultimately crossed the line eleventh, just 0.8 seconds outside the points. Montoya, meanwhile, made steady progress from the midfield after his difficult Saturday, picking up places late on including a move on Tsolov at Turn 20 on the final lap, to finish thirteenth.

F2 now heads to Baku for Round 12 of the 2026 season, from September 24–26.

#11 – SEBASTIAN MONTOYA
“A difficult Feature Race today, but honestly I’m really happy with the speed of the car. The step we made from yesterday to today was really big, and I want to say a big thank you to the engineers and the mechanics, they did a great job all week.

“We were one of the quickest cars at the end of the race on the option tyre, so I’m really happy with that. We were a bit unlucky with the safety car coming out just after I’d stopped, but that’s how it goes. It wasn’t an easy week and there were things we could have done better, but we just need to keep working and keep going bit by bit. I really enjoyed the track, it was a fun weekend, and I think we made a good step forward and showed some good speed today, so I’m really pleased with that.”

#12 – MARI BOYA
“We did our best today and maximised our strategy even though we had a bit of bad luck with the final safety car.

“The race itself was really enjoyable, and it was great to see all the crowd supporting me, it felt really special.”
