Another victory for APEX Competition in the Italian GT Endurance Championship, which took place on the ups and downs of Imola in the third round of the season. The Porsche 488 driven by Roberto Benedetti and Danny Santi scored its second victory of the year, completing a remarkable comeback and taking the team to the top of the standings with a ten-point advantage over its rivals. The Porsche 531 of Mauro Trione, Giovanni Trione, and Pierluigi Veronesi, competing in the AM class, also had a positive weekend. The team showed consistent improvement throughout all sessions, progressively improving performance and feeling with the car.
The Imola result was a significant one for the entire Rome-based team, which in its debut year in the ACI Sport championships achieved a total of seven victories in nine races. In three rounds of the Italian GT Endurance Championship, APEX Competition took two wins and a second place with the Stuttgart-based car sporting the 488 on its side panels, confirming its position as a key player in the Italian GT Championship. The weekend, however, didn’t get off to an easy start. Due to a minor illness he suffered over the weekend, Max Lanza opted to forgo the start so as not to jeopardize the crew’s race. The car was thus forced to start from the back of the grid, relying on Roberto Benedetti and Danny Santi for a comeback race.
From the early stages, the 488 showed extremely competitive pace, gradually gaining ground to reclaim the top spots in the PRO-AM class. Santi’s work was particularly important, completing a double stint and leading for two of the three hours of the race. Despite a five-second penalty for overtaking under flagging conditions, which was served at the end of the race, the APEX Porsche managed to secure the lead and defend it until the checkered flag. The penalty did not impact the final result, allowing a solid Benedetti and a legendary Santi to celebrate their second win of the season, dedicated to teammate and owner Max Lanza, who has always been close to the team in the pits.
The Porsche 531 of Mauro Trione, Giovanni Trione, and Pierluigi Veronesi, competing in the AM class, also had a positive weekend. The crew showed consistent growth throughout all sessions, progressively improving performance and feeling with the car. Throughout the race, the 531 maintained a consistent and competitive pace, remaining in the fight for podium positions for a long time. The intervention of the Safety Car, however, penalized the crew’s race, as they were stuck in traffic due to various lapped cars. Despite this, Trione, Trione, and Veronesi continued to push until the finish, crossing the finish line in fourth place in the AM class, just shy of the podium. This result confirms the crew’s progress after finishing third in the previous round.
Max Lanza, APEX Competition driver and Team Manager, commented: “This is a truly significant victory, as it came at the end of a far from easy weekend. I was disappointed not to be able to take part in the race, but at that point the priority was to avoid causing problems for the crew and to put Roberto and Danny in the best possible conditions. Both had an extraordinary race, and Danny, in particular, did an exceptional job, driving for two hours and bringing home the result. I’m proud of them and the entire team. Winning two out of three races and now leading the championship by a ten-point advantage demonstrates the strength of our project. However, we must not let our guard down: the final round awaits us, and we will have to approach it with the same focus and determination we have shown so far. I’m also very pleased with the performance of the 531, a constant progression throughout the weekend that led to a solid result of absolute importance. With a little more luck, Pierluigi, Giovanni, and Mauro would also have deserved their second podium of the season.”
The Imola round thus strengthens the position of APEX Competition in the Italian GT Endurance Championship: the Porsche 488 enters the final round of the season as the leader of the PRO-AM class, while the 531 confirms its competitiveness in the AM category. With two wins and a second place in the first three races and the Italian Sprint title already secured by Meijer and Attianese with one race to spare, APEX Competition is now preparing for the decisive season finale with a clear goal: to defend its lead and round out an already incredible debut season in the best possible way.
