A fourth-place finish over the weekend at the Austin circuit in Texas ushered in Alessio Rovera’s eight-day world tour, earning valuable points for the Endurance World Championship. The 31-year-old Ferrari factory driver will conclude his double intercontinental trip next Sunday at Suzuka, where he will make his debut. At the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), the driver from Varese has competed in the US round of the FIA World Endurance Championship for several years now, and last Sunday, driving the Ferrari 296 LMGT3 Evo of the Vista AF Corse team, he was a key player in the fifth round of the 2026 championship. In the six-hour race on the 5,513-meter Austin circuit, a race nicknamed the Lone Star Le Mans, Alessio and his teammates François Heriau and Simon Mann attempted to make up as many positions as possible after the French driver began his driving stints from eighth on the grid. Mann replaced Heriau in the middle stages of the race, while Rovera, who had taken over in sixth place, dominated the final two hours, climbing to fourth place in the red and silver No. 21 Ferrari. He also made a long push for a podium finish, crossing the finish line just half a second behind third.
The result in Texas allows the team to extend the positive streak begun at the season opener in Imola, and with the 12 points earned in Austin, the Italian squad has climbed to second in the team standings. The three drivers now occupy third place, 22 points off the top spot, with the next round of the FIA WEC scheduled for the Fuji circuit at the end of September. First, however, as mentioned, Rovera will face his first ever challenge at Suzuka, one of the world’s most renowned circuits. The stage will be the Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC), the series promoted by SRO, which is holding its fourth round of the season at the Suzuka 1000 Kilometers. The Ferrari driver will replace teammate Thomas Neubauer (injured in training) in the crew that includes Japanese drivers Yusaku Maezawa and Naoki Yokomizo at the wheel of the 296 GT3 Evo entered by Maezawa Racing in the Bronze class. After practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, the race gets underway on Sunday, September 13th at 12:50 p.m. (5:50 a.m. in Italy) with live streaming on the series’ official website https://www.intercontinentalgtchallenge.com/.
Rovera stated after Texas and ahead of Japan: “We didn’t find the turning point of the season in Austin, but the points we earned are valuable for the championship and give us breathing space. However, at Fuji we’ll probably need at least a podium finish, which we’ve been chasing since the start of the season, to be able to compete for the title in the final two races in Barcelona and Monza. Before getting there, however, I’ll make my debut at Suzuka. There will be a lot to discover; it will be a truly interesting challenge on a circuit that many have spoken highly of, and which I’ve already started studying to prepare as best I can.”
