The Antonelli Motorsport team claimed victory at Imola in the Italian GT Endurance Championship, celebrating the 250th race in a historic weekend for the Antonelli name and the Mercedes colors.
At the Santerno circuit, the crew of 23-year-old Lorenzo Ferrari from Piacenza and the very young Israeli Guy Albag (born in 2009) secured victory in the 3 Hours, the third of four rounds of the endurance series. This victory came almost simultaneously with the epic victory achieved by Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Monza, in an Italian Grand Prix that has become a legend.
This victory was the fruit of hard work throughout the weekend and in the tests held at Imola at the end of August. So much so that at the end of qualifying on Saturday, Albag and Ferrari almost secured pole position, posting the second-fastest time.
Albag then took the start and immediately took the lead. Since then, the No. 64 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo of Marco Antonelli’s team has virtually dominated. No mistakes, an excellent strategy, and perfect pit stops allowed Ferrari to cross the finish line first, more than 18 seconds ahead of the Spirit of Racing Ferrari 296 GT3.
The victory at Imola, which follows the third-place finish at the Misano opener last May, also propelled the San Marino team to the top of the standings, where they now lead with 56 points compared to the 43 of the Lamborghini of Liberati, Michelotto, and Zanon.
The other crew, composed of Sicilian Giuseppe Guirreri and Italian-Australian Stefano Pedani (19 and 17 years old respectively), also performed well at Imola, managing the race excellently without making any mistakes.
A race that ended with them finishing tenth overall and sixth in the GT3 Pro-Am class, a result that rewards them for the pace they managed to set while staying out of trouble.
The final round of the Italian Endurance Championship will take place at Mugello on the weekend of October 30th – November 1st.
